Why am I seeing “The device should play soon”?

Written by Patricia Rains

“The device should play soon” is displayed when you start playing music on a remote device. It can take a few seconds for that device to receive the playback command and begin playing.

If you don't hear music after 15 seconds, the selected player may no longer be available, may be muted, or music may be playing on a different player than the one you're expecting.

If you want music to play on the device you're currently using

Make sure playback is set to Play Here or This Device, depending on which version of the player bar you're using.

player bar (new)

This tells Pandora CloudCover to play the selected Zone through the browser you're currently using.

If you see “The device should play soon” but don't hear anything, confirm that:

  • Playback isn't paused.

  • Your browser isn't muted.

  • Your computer volume is turned up.

  • Another device hasn't taken over playback for the same Zone.

If music should be playing on a remote player

If the Zone is playing on another device, the player bar may show Remote or the name/type of the remote player, such as:

  • CloudBox

  • Browser

  • Mobile

  • Sonos

This means Pandora CloudCover is controlling music on that remote player rather than playing through your current browser.

If you see “The device should play soon” but don't hear anything, the remote player may no longer be available or able to play audio.

Check that:

  • The player is powered on and still connected.

  • The device itself isn't muted and its volume is turned up.

  • Playback isn't paused.

  • The player is still associated with the correct Zone.

If you want to hear music on your current device instead, select Play Here or This Device.

Make sure you're controlling the correct Zone

If you manage multiple locations or Zones, confirm that you've selected the location where you expect to hear music.

You may otherwise be controlling a player at a different location.

If you're using a CloudBox

If music should be playing through a CloudBox but you don't hear anything:

  • Make sure the CloudBox is powered on and connected to your network.

  • Make sure playback isn't paused.

  • Confirm the Zone isn't muted and the volume is turned up.

  • Check the CloudBox status in Pandora CloudCover. A green status indicator means the CloudBox is playing music.

If the CloudBox appears to be offline, see Troubleshooting the CloudBox: LED Status Lights for additional troubleshooting steps.
